In the realm of high school, relationships can be as complicated as adult ones are normally perceived. Eddie is hopelessly in love with his best friend, Wendy, who, unaware of his interest, is infatuated with another guy. Luke and Roxanne have the perfect relationship – they communicate, give each other space, are never jealous. But Roxanne is about to graduate and go to Fordham, leaving Luke, a junior, behind – the one subject they avoid. Randy and Charlotte's relationship is tempestuously opposite – jealousy, mistrust, poor communication. However, on the side, Randy is seeing Laura, Charlotte's best friend. Last year, Laura broke up with George, Randy's close friend. George hasn't ever really recovered from this and still hopes desperately that she will come back to him. The play, a series of vignettes, monologues and media, focuses on the wonderful, painful, exhilarating moments of relationships. It is a comedy that follows the relationships of eight juniors and seniors as they are confronted by emotions that adult in magnitude but are cramped by the confines of high school.
The play is a collaborative effort of twelve high school students and Maryann Carolan and John Rotondo. John and Maryann worked with the students and brainstormed critical ideas in relationships: the first kiss, flirting, dating, breaking up and going to college
"I absolutely love this play. It was a blast working on and every character is so different and expresses
themselves throughout the entire play. The humor is funny and age-appropriate. You will laugh and might even shed a
tear in this wonderful show!"
-Sophia Gutchinov as Wendy McGann, Red Bank Regional High School
"Love (Awkwardly) was the perfect fall play for my students. Never before had we produced a
show where they had so strongly identified with the characters they were portraying. The rehearsal
process was filled with discussions about relationships, both their own and their characters', and it was
amazing to see how much they opened up to each other as well as to their audience. I highly
recommend this play to any high school theatre director who is looking for a show that their students will
truly enjoy, both as performers and as audience members."
-Stacie Morano, Director, Bordentown Regional High School
